The Broad
Los Angeles, CA
“A composed gradient of light reveals the structure and depth of the façade while maintaining an understated urban presence.”
At night, the building becomes a quiet beacon within downtown Los Angeles, its porous veil gently animated by a soft gradient of light. The façade’s delicate, cellular skin is revealed through a subtle interplay of highlights and shadow, allowing the architecture to glow with a lantern-like presence. The illumination is carefully attuned to its surroundings, framing the building while respecting the neighboring residential towers and concert hall. At the primary entries, softly lit horizontal prows form luminous thresholds, inviting visitors inward while preserving the transparency of the glazing and the clarity of the form. The cantilevered inner vault appears to hover. Accent lights recede overhead, allowing brief glimpses into the archive spaces to emerge as moments of quiet discovery. Outside, ancient olive trees and the gently rising lawn are framed with light, anchoring the building in a shared dialogue between architecture, light, and the city.
