Red Bull Music Academy
New York, NY
"A dynamic lighting system transforms the Academy’s architecture, guiding movement, enhancing performance, and sustaining creative energy around the clock."
In the New York neighborhood of Chelsea, four floors of the Red Bull Music Academy were transformed into a dynamic constellation of meeting spaces, galleries, recording studios, and performance areas — an environment designed to spark creativity and collaboration among musicians producing music in entirely new ways. Here, light became a central instrument, orchestrating the experience of architecture from day to night while enhancing the rhythm of the space without ever feeling disruptive. During the day, expansive floor-to-ceiling windows and uplights flood central areas and studio pods with natural and synthesized light, revealing the geometry and openness of the architecture. At night, a series of warm, custom-fabricated neon tubes and a backlit acrylic tube installations above the bar transform the interiors into immersive, atmospheric environments. Outside the Forum, canary-yellow surfaces are intensified by paired neon tubes, forming a dramatic entry sequence into the lecture hall. Below, the black lounge is traced by hundreds of linear LED dashes, wrapping walls and revealing its capsule shape. All of this was achieved under the intense constraint of six weeks to take the design from concept to fully coordinated construction documents, requiring precision, collaboration, and a deep understanding of light’s architectural and experiential power. Across the entire building, lighting does more than illuminate — it supports an environment where creativity, collaboration, and experimentation thrive at every hour.
