Governor's Cup Pavilion
New York, NY
Transforming 30,000 discarded cups into a shimmering canopy, the pavilion reimagines waste as a lightweight, resilient, and beautiful public space.
The City of Dreams "Governors Cup" pavilion competition winner is a winding, sculptural form crafted from 30,000 reclaimed plastic cups nestled among the trees on Governors Island’s Parade Ground. Acting as both a welcoming gateway and an open-air gathering space, it forms a floating landscape of shifting light and shadow. Harbor breezes bring the structure to life, setting it into a gentle shimmer of movement and sound. Made from translucent and reflective materials, the pavilion captures and refracts sunlight in unexpected ways. Its crochet-like construction uses woven strips to bend and redirect views, combining a sturdy, closely stitched spine with airy, lace-like panels. Perforations in each cup keep the structure lightweight while revealing glimpses of the changing sky overhead. By transforming discarded materials into an elegant shade canopy, the installation illustrates how waste can be reimagined into something both beautiful and functional— serving as a prototype for future adaptable, resilient, and low-cost public structures.
